Gdańsk, one of the most beautiful Polish cities, has been captivating for centuries with its unique atmosphere that combines rich history with modernity. One of the places that perfectly reflects this unique combination is Szafarnia – a picturesque street located by the shore of the New Motława River. Located in the vicinity of attractions such as the Granaries Island or Ołowianka, it is a must-see on the map of every tourist visiting Gdańsk. Discover the fascinating history of this place and find out why it is worth stopping here during your visit to the capital of Pomerania.
Szafarnia, formerly known as Schäfferei, owes its beginnings to the Teutonic Order. After the conquest of Gdańsk by the Teutonic Knights in 1308, the right bank of the Motława became a strategic trading and storage place for goods. The name of the street comes from “szafarz” – a monastic steward who supervised the storage and distribution of goods such as grain, cloth, or spices. Due to its convenient location by the river and the presence of numerous granaries, Szafarnia quickly became one of the most important trading points in Gdańsk.
After the end of Teutonic rule, in the 15th century Szafarnia came under the administration of the city of Gdańsk, which contributed to further development of the area. During this period, significant changes were made to the water infrastructure, creating new canals that surrounded and strengthened Szafarnia's position as the commercial heart of the city. The New Motława was created – a navigable branch of the river, which still surrounds the historic center of Gdańsk today.
During the Renaissance, further warehouses and workshops were built in Szafarnia, supporting the developing maritime trade. Narrow strips of gardens extending along the river appear on maps from this period, adding extra charm to the place.
In the 19th century, Szafarnia underwent further transformations. On the site of the former granaries, monumental warehouses, such as the Seepackhof, known as the “New Packing House,” were erected. This was a facility where small goods were stored – bales of fabric, bags of spices, or crates of exotic fruits. The street became an important port center for both sea and river ships.
During this time, representative administrative buildings were also constructed, including the Main Customs Office and the headquarters of the Tax Directorate of the Province of West Prussia. Elegant tenements and cobbled streets completed the picture of a vibrant port district that attracted merchants and entrepreneurs from all over the region.
Like many other parts of Gdańsk, Szafarnia suffered during World War II. Bombings and fighting for the city left ruins, from which this historic district was only able to rise decades later. Reconstruction began in the second half of the 20th century, restoring the place's former glory.
A turning point in the history of Szafarnia was the economic and urban transformation of the 1990s. Former industrial and warehouse areas began to make way for modern investments such as a sailing marina, apartment buildings, and luxury hotels.
Today, Szafarnia is not only a street with a rich history but also one of the trendiest parts of Gdańsk. While strolling along its waterfront, you can admire the renovated granaries, such as the New Packing House, and modern buildings that harmoniously blend into the historic landscape. Nearby are the Baltic Philharmonic, the National Maritime Museum, and the famous AmberSky Ferris Wheel, which offers breathtaking views of the city skyline.
Szafarnia also attracts food lovers – numerous restaurants, including the unique "Śliwka w Kompot Gdańsk" and cafes serve local specialties as well as international cuisine. In the evenings, the waterfront comes alive with concerts, cultural events, and romantic walks in the glow of street lamps reflecting in the waters of the Motława.
